The Indian army chief went to Ladakh in hot weather

Border tensions have resurfaced between India and China.  Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravan visited Ladakh on Thursday for a two-day visit to assess the readiness of the army to repel any attack in hot weather.

The army chief reached Naravan this morning.  He will examine the real situation in three strategically important areas on the southern edge of Pangong Lake, one of the epicenters of the conflict between India and China in eastern Ladakh.
India has accused Chinese forces of trying to infiltrate Indian territory twice in the past week.  The Red Army first tried to infiltrate Indian territory south of Pangong Lake in Ladakh between midnight on August 29 and 30.  Instead of unilaterally changing the position of the Line of Control, a contingent of about 200 Chinese troops came forward to occupy Indian territory.  But this time the Indian army was ready.  Resisting the aggression, the Indian army took possession of the hilly areas south of the hitherto empty Pangong Lake.  Seeing the situation strange, the Red Army retreated.  Despite China's claims, they did not show any aggression on the border.  On the contrary, Beijing has accused Indian troops of spreading tension across the border.

Meanwhile, a brigadier-level meeting between Indian and Chinese troops is still underway at Chushul in eastern Ladakh to normalize the situation on the border.  But this time the meeting is being held in an open space and not in a tent set up at a specific border meeting point.  It is clear that despite the talks, India does not trust the Red Army at all.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh held a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the situation in Pangong.  Foreign Minister S Jayashankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief MM Naravan were present at the meeting.

It is to be noted that even after the meeting, China did not agree to withdraw from Pangong Lake and Finger areas.  On the contrary, Chinese military bases have been seen at Galwan, Gogra, Hot Springs, Depsang Plain, Pangong Lake and mountain points in eastern Ladakh.
